DELIVERED FROM SHAME

In this lesson you will learn what shame is and how people deal with shame. You will learn that Jesus delivered us from shame.

 

I.                    Definition of shame.

A.     The conscious awareness in a person’s mind and heart that they have guilt and condemnation. Shame causes people to have a loss of dignity, honor, and confidence. Shame also causes people to feel unworthy, unimportant, and of no value.

 

II.                 Some of the things that cause shame in a person’s life.

A.     Troubled background, family situations, or broken home.

B.     Financial conditions, lack of finances.

C.     Lack of education.

D.     Religious systems, didn’t measure up to expectations.

 

III.               How people deal with shame.

A.     Pride and arrogance.

B.     Draw inward – life becomes a walled fortress.

C.     Occupy self in busyness and try to ignore or bury shame.

D.     Compare themselves with others.

 

IV.              Jesus delivered us from shame.

A.     Romans 8:1-2 – “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus…” – v.1. Jesus came as the second Adam to restore what the first Adam lost and get back what the enemy had stolen.

B.     Isaiah 54:4 – “Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed; neither be disgraced, for you will not be put to shame; for you will forget the shame of your youth…”

C.     Isaiah 53:1-6 – Jesus bore our shame and experienced our rejection.

D.     1 John 1:9 – If we confess our sins, Jesus will cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

E.      Romans 3:21-24 – The righteousness of God comes through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe.

F.      Romans 5:17 – Gift of righteousness will cause you to reign in life.

This message is twofold: first, directed to you for your own personal life, and second, to flow through you toward others so you don’t put shame on people but lift it off of them.
