In this lesson you will learn what it means to be redeemed from the curse of the law. Jesus is the Redeemer, and when you receive Him you are forgiven of your sins.
- You have been redeemed.
- Galatians 3:13,14 – “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’)” – v. 13.
- “Redeemed” means to purchase with a price, to liberate from captivity with a ransom price.
- In redeeming, there is something that was once owned, but it was lost into the hands of another. To redeem means to get it back.
- First Peter 1:18,19 – We were captured in sin and the curse that came with that sin, and Jesus paid the price of His blood to free us from that sin.
- What is the curse of the law?
- The first five books of the Old Testament give us the law, called the Torah or the Pentateuch.
- Deuteronomy 28:15-68 – To fall short of the law was to be cursed. To be cursed is disastrous. The curse brings plagues, disease, insanity, families ripped apart, and finances ruined.
- Jesus is the only One who didn’t break the law.
- Jesus is our Redeemer.
- God is not only a merciful and gracious God; He is a holy and just God. He must punish sin. We were without hope before Christ came.
- Jesus had the worth, value, and the ability to redeem us, and He was willing to shed His blood to redeem us.
- At the cross, God’s justice and mercy came together. Jesus chose to take the justice of God, the judgment of God, for our sins so the mercy of God could be poured out to us.
- First John 1:9 – You are now justified, which means “not guilty.” You are freed from Satan’s power. Sin cannot hold or dominate you any longer. What you have repented of is forgiven, forgotten, and blotted out from heaven’s records. It means you don’t have to have guilt or condemnation in your life anymore.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
- What does it mean to you to be redeemed from the curse?
- Was there a time you tried to live according to the law?
- How do you know your sin has been forgiven and forgotten?
BE A DOER OF THE WORD
This week pray to get a new understanding of being “not guilty,” once you have asked for forgiveness of sin. It is time to be free of guilt and condemnation and walk in the freedom Jesus purchased for you.
